I've realised I'm not good at reading the epic boasts of people and their multi page, single paragraph tellings of how great they are and how many people they killed in the most blood thirsty ways. Ultimately, the attrition of urban warfare, takes such a toll on the Amazons that they cannot recover. James Turner appears in some ways to be modelled on Ransome himself. He refuses even to listen when they try to pass on a warning to him about burglars in the area.

A few of the Greeks who travel with Theseus fall half in love with the wild and free and argue its case with half their hearts; Theseus does himself; and the Amazon queen too finds herself torn. The second edition contained drawings by Clifford Webb Last of the Amazons book after Ransome successfully illustrated Peter Duck himself, he decided to do his own drawings for all the books, including those already published, and Webb's drawings were replaced in later editions. True, the whole march on Athens was the Trojan War in reverse, as he brings out. Soon, you find yourself drawn into a fascinating legendary nation of wholly warrior women equal to men in physical stamina and battle skills. When the children meet, they agree to join forces against a common enemy — the Blacketts' uncle Jim Turner whom they call "Captain Flint" after the parrot in Treasure Island. Yorick's ring was a similarly supposedly mystical Middle Eastern relic, alleged to muddle the bearer's gender in order to give a married man an aspect of his wife's femininity, and vice versa.

According to the Iliad, Amazons attacked the Phrygianswho were assisted by Priamthen a young man. In A Nutshell: Steven Pressfield is my go-to for ancient war books. Last of the Amazons is not merely a masterful tale of war and revenge. Atlantians presented her with magnificent presents and by public decree voted to her notable honours, and she in return accepted their courtesy and in addition promised that she would show kindness to their nation. The Walkers camp on an island in the lake while the Blacketts live in their house nearby.
